I conducted an explorative case in which 13 M.Sc. design students gained insight into the world of autistic children. The students were assigned to gather information about the experiential world of children with autism for their design project.
Children with autism in India

I was in India to explore possibilities for a joint project on autism with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore (India). This institute wants to develop a wearable communication tool for children with autism. During my stay in Bangalore, I visited a special school for autistic children in Bangalore, called ASHA. ASHA teaches about 70 children with autism, most in the range of 4 to 18 years old.

Together with Mariet Schreurs I designed ‘de Klessebessers’, an activity for people with dementia to actively recall memories together. Our design won the first prize in design competition ‘vergeethenniet’ and is now in use at De Landrijt in Eindhoven.
LINKX for autistic toddlers

I graduated cum laude for the my master ‘Design for Interaction’ at the TU Delft with a research on how autistic children can be triggered to learn new words. With this project I was awarded as best graduate 2006-2007 of Industrial Design Engineering & TU Delft.
Contextmapping in East Asia
During my master I did an extra-curricular explorative research about the development of new tools and techniques to elicit East Asian participants to express themselves (van Rijn et al. 2006, van Rijn and Stappers, 2007).
International Design Contest in Taiwan
I was selected by the TU Delft to participate in the ‘International Design Contest’ in Taiwan. Aim of this workshop about interactive toys at the National Cheng Kun University (NCKU) was to stimulate cooperation among universities over the world.

Each MP3 player looks somewhat the same, although there are so many different people in the world. In the master course ‘interactive technology design’ I designed players with the personalities of people as starting point.
